Crafting and You

Captain Anjel's Log                                - by David "AnjelusX" Slauenwhite

January 24th 1495

Ahoy, I’ve written quite a bit so far on my various voyages and the many things I’ve learned. I’ve tried my hand at various jobs, gone exploring for treasure, battled pirates, and engaged in trade. During my turn building ships and preparing to make for the New World, I’ve also dabbled in the diverse experience that is crafting. One of the more expansive systems to be involved in there are several avenues of getting your hands dirty and making items for your own benefit or for sale to others. Taking a cue from what I’ve seen other voyagers accomplish and my own experimenting, I found that crafting can be rewarding not only in building items I might otherwise have to search town after town for. Crafting is also a lucrative way to make some money while I’m in port on shore leave.

 January 4, 1495

Ahoy fellow voyagers, I hope you’ve made the best of your travels! Finding profit, fame, glory, or treasure on the high seas and the unexplored wilds. I have come to a point in my journal where I would like to start focusing on the various aspects to be found in the world that are beneficial and worth exploring as you make your travels from port to port. For this entry, I want to note my experiences with Shipbuilding, a hobby for some, a business and passion for others. For myself I feel that while I know there are some hearty ship builders out in the world, I had to experience it for myself. Nothing like getting my hands dirty and building a vessel to my own specifications! It is a time consuming effort certainly, but also a labour of love, to decide what kinds of ships I wish to build, of what materials, and of course how I want her laid out with enough cargo, crew, and cannon to make the endeavour worth my time.

Day in the life of Merchant

Picture
January 4, 1495

Happy New Year friends and companions, times change and while there is a time when you have to fight, and there are times when you can track through the wilds; there are also the need for money to fund your adventures and battles. For myself, I’ve found that if I want to really succeed on the seas I must learn art that is trade. There are many ways for an enterprising merchant to make real money plying the waters of the world. Buying and selling goods from port to port, keeping a keen eye on the markets to find the best deals and to know what’s selling high where and what isn’t worth purchasing until the market changes.

Traveling far and wide to distant ports, carrying goods from further away can yield greater bonuses in money, xp, and fame as you sell your wares. Larger quantities will boost those bonuses even higher. So going the distance with a sizeable cargo makes the journey more than worth it. To keep things interesting there is all manner of types of products to trade in. From alcohol to weapons, food, and commodities, you can deal in one type of trade good or mix and match to suit your preference. I am keen on the trade of animal products, but I could also easily see myself going an even longer distance to trade in weapons and art work as my travels adventuring take me to greater distances away from my home port so having a side business as a merchant can help me build both my money but also my fame throughout the world.

Day in the life of Maritime
December 26, 1494

While in my mind, adventuring is my main calling, like any loyal and passionate citizen of my nation, I do my part by partaking in the Maritime activities of my country. Pirates are everywhere on the open seas, along coastal waters and vibrant throughout the world. Traveling even for an experienced captain can be perilous for one never knows when they might strike and being prepared to protect yourself and your cargo is a requirement for any salty dog wishing to ply the oceans of the world.

The first and foremost skill I found to be useful to me was learning the art of Gunnery. Knowing and using one’s cannons in a capable and effective manner can be the meaning between survival and getting sunk and pillaged. I learned during my time at the Academy the various methods and types of shot available to me which lead to my choices of armaments. I enjoy using my distance cannons to manoeuvre around fighting off and sinking pirates, I also am well pleased using incendiary shot to light up my enemies and create chaos for them. Planning and executing my ships turns in combat allows me to place critical shots on my enemy’s bow and stern for even more effective damage, which is always pleasant.

Day in the life of Adventurer

Captain Anjel’s Log - December 21st 1494

When I first felt the call of the sea, it was during a chat with my grand father by the fire when I was but a child. He regaled me with many a sea tale as his time on the ocean when he was a young lad. His stories of distant ports and amazing wonders sparked within me a deep yearning to carry out my own escapades across strange waters and into unknown lands. In my heart I knew I had a wild sense of adventure, and it was to that purpose I worked my way through school and struck out at first as an Adventurer, bent on discovering amazing artifacts and wondrous locations and exciting new animals. I was inspired of his tales of Egypt and great wonders to behold on the dunes that seemed to him to be near endless.

His tales of the Far East with the different architecture and manner of dress; as well as the ivory of Africa mingled with stories of tribal women and savoury spices. All of which built up until I was ready to take sail and make my own discoveries, seeking treasures unknown and make my fortune finding relics for wealthy patrons.

Which Class to Choose?

Picture
November 25, 1494

Anjel’s Log:This is my first entry, and while I want record my adventures, trials and tribulations, I also want to provide some information for the hearty sailing men and women who follow me on their own grand adventure. The best place to begin is finding your place among the many classes there are to experience in the game. Classes come in a wide range of flavours broken up into the 3 main categories of types which offer any brave soul a chance for glory and fortune. Within those categories are three levels of classes which go from Beginner, Intermediate, and Master Classes so you know you’re achieving success as you grow from your first job to the next. All of these offered me a healthy choice of skills for each class has a selection of favoured skills.

Experiencing the rolling waves and completing quests and making your mark will allow you to go up from Beginner to Master Classes. Reaching the next stage of class increase the number of favoured skills and even leads you eventually to Expert and Master Skills. I should explain a bit more about favoured skills for at their basic function they are skills that one particular class does really well and you can obtain them without any level requirement from the Guild Master of that particular category. First though, I’m going to break my log entry and include some of the noteworthy information about the three categories of class types in UWO to give a better picture of the various types of classes and characters possible for you to try and master.
